Early Life and Education

Ghazal Alagh was born on 2 September 1988 in Chandigarh. She completed her schooling in Gurgaon, Haryana. While she was good in her studies till the tenth standard, however, the situation changed when she opted for Non-Medical in Plus Two. She found that failure was close for the first time, and she narrowly passed the Mathematics exam with poor results. After that, she started taking interest in Computer Science and did well in that.

Like every middle-class family, Ghazal found herself navigating the maze of competitive exams after schooling. However, as she delved into the intricacies of these exams, Ghazal realized that this wasn't the path she wished to tread. Courageously, she said to her parents and expressed her choice of not preparing for the exam.

Fortunately, Ghazal's parents understood and supported her. However, parental wisdom also came with a condition – if Ghazal desired a different path, she had to embark on it herself and learn the true essence of earning. She did an internship with a stipend of 5000 while pursuing her graduation. The support from her parents wasn't just about granting freedom of choice but also about instilling the values of responsibility and self-sufficiency. Later it helped her in her entrepreneurial journey.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Computer Applications Degree from Panjab University and even secured a job before completing her graduation. She also graduated with a Degree in Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Arts. In 2008, she worked as a corporate trainer at NIIT Limited. Ghazal worked there for two years. She used to train managers and engineers from several IT companies in SQL, J2ME, and Oracle.

Entrepreneurial Journey

Life took a turn when she met Varun Alagh and they married. The couple moved to the Philippines for the job. It was in this new environment that Ghazal rediscovered her passion for painting.

First venture

Ghazal Alagh faced a setback in her first venture. The idea came when she was struggling with weight loss, compounded by frequent relocations. The startup was "Diet Expert". The concept aimed to cater to individuals seeking weight loss solutions amid travel constraints. Although the venture showed good growth, it ultimately faced challenges and did not succeed. The same happened with her second venture.

After some time, they returned to India. Ghazal and Varun welcomed their first child, Agastya. However, joy turned into concern when Agastya was diagnosed with a skin condition. Every product applied to his delicate skin resulted in rashes and discomfort, which made Ghazal feel guilty for not being able to help her child. She talked to the doctors, friends and new parents and found that many people are facing the same issue.

It prompted Ghazal to question the safety of commonly available baby care products. It was in this moment of parental distress that the seed for Mamaearth was planted. She used to order products from outside India.

Agastya's health struggles became the catalyst for change. Ghazal, in collaboration with her husband and friends facing similar challenges, embarked on a mission to create products that were safe and gentle for infants. She started reading about different ingredients and products. Their doctor used to call them "Google Parents". It was a personal quest that soon evolved into a business venture, fuelled by a determination to fill the gap in the market for toxin-free baby care products. They introduced six products for babies in September of 2016.

Challenges being a woman and mother

Launching a business while navigating the challenges of new motherhood was no easy feat. Ghazal faced scepticism from peers, relatives, and even within herself. People used to constantly question her prioritising business over her child. But the couple supported each other every time.

However, the adversity only fuelled her determination to create a brand that prioritized safety and quality for every child and parent. Ghazal managed both motherhood and business smartly and proved that a mother can do everything.

Being a woman, Ghazal's journey was not without its share of professional hurdles in the business world. Leading the innovation department of Mamaearth, she encountered biases and faced resistance from some team members. Undeterred, she persevered, demonstrating her capability and commitment to the cause.
